Clock Design & Construction (third
edition)
This book does not deal with particular clocks, but
takes various aspects of a mechanical movement such as spring and
weight drives, compensated pendulums, gear trains, escapements etc,
describes their design and the practical details of making them.

Gear Cutting on the Lathe
This very practical book is back in print again. It
covers the making of gears using simple indexing systems, and
bought, or home made tools. Calculations for the gears themselves to
ensure that repairs and replacements mesh properly with existing
wheels and pinions and the design of new gear trains for your own
clocks. 'Gear Cutting' forms part of the series 'Making Clocks'
which is also being reprinted and added to.
Printed and sold by Lulu at www.lulu.com for $9.98 (plus S & H)
Clock Repairer’s
Handbook (sixth reprint)
Exactly as the title; this is a description of
skills, tools and methods used in repairing mechanical clocks of all
periods. The first chapter is a dichotomy, a method of following a
trail of symptoms in a clock until at the end of the trail, the
problem is identified and solutions described. This book has proved
very popular over the years, selling several tens of thousands of
copies.

Harrison’s Grasshopper. Detailed scale (although not dimensioned)
drawings abound, many of them being progressive and showing the
operation from beat to beat. Practical details of manufacture are
also dealt with.

timepiece to grand sonnerie. Many progressively detailed drawings
showing the position of the various components of mechanisms from
one moment to the next. Trouble shooting sections for each category
identify the most probable cause of various symptoms and suggesting
corrections. The platform escapement is detailed too and various
repair techniques.

Home Study Courses in Clock
Making
Laurie Penman, Instructor
The Home Study Course (HSC) consists of seventeen
sections of text and drawings on various aspects of clock repairing
and making techniques. This reading is designed to provide the
information needed for repairing clocks and replacing some worn, or
lost parts such as gears, parts of striking mechanisms, worn pivots
and pivot holes. There are periodic tests on these subjects which
are to be posted back to the AWCI at Harrison for examination by the
instructor and (if necessary), comments on improvements that can be
made.
However, texts, drawings and test pieces are
not sufficient. It is impossible for any text to cover all
the problems that a clock maker will come across as they work at
their bench and so a considerable amount of correspondence by
e-mail, or telephone with the instructor is allowed for - and
encouraged. The teaching is, therefore, a one to one business -
there is always the same instructor, Laurie Penman, who has had
several decades of experience of repairing and restoring clocks of
all nationalities and ages, from the 17th century to the 20th.
